How due i sue someone without the aid of an attorney ?

I was aulted with bodily injury. This guy does not have a pot to piss in and faces jail time. I would like to know how to go after him legally for my suffering. Scars, emotional distress, ect..... I have contacted a few lawyers with minimal success. I was at a private residence when this person broke in and attacked me unprovoked. He later admited this to the police. Any thoughts ???
